FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Straight answers about obesity medicine and how care at NewVeria works.

Getting Started

Who can become a patient?

Adults 18 and older who are located in Massachusetts at the time of their visits. Whether a particular treatment, including medication, is right for you is determined during your medical evaluation.

Can I do everything virtually?

Yes. Your visits take place by secure video, and you can message your provider between appointments. If lab work is needed, you complete it at a local lab.

What happens at my first visit?

Your provider reviews your health history, current medications, past weight-loss experiences, and goals. Together you discuss your options and, if appropriate, begin a personalized treatment plan.

Will I see the same provider every time?

Yes. Every visit is with Jon DeOliveira, NP — the same clinician who knows your history and follows your progress over time.

What languages do you offer care in?

English, Spanish, and Portuguese. Your provider speaks all three fluently, so you can talk with him directly in the language you're most comfortable with.

Cost & Insurance

What does the $199 cover?

Your membership covers your ongoing medical care: personalized treatment planning, virtual visits, medication management and dose adjustments, monitoring of your progress, lab review, side-effect management, and secure messaging with your provider between visits.

Is medication included?

No. Medication is paid for separately. Its cost depends on the medication prescribed, your pharmacy, and your insurance coverage, if any. Your provider can talk through cost considerations with you.

Do you accept insurance?

NewVeria is a cash-pay practice and does not bill insurance for membership. Your insurance may still cover your medication or lab work, depending on your plan.

Are lab costs included?

No. When labs are needed, your provider orders them and reviews the results with you. The lab bills separately, and your insurance may apply.

Can I cancel?

Yes. There is no long-term commitment, and you can cancel anytime.

Medications

What medications do you prescribe?

When medication is medically appropriate, we prescribe FDA-approved weight-management medications such as Wegovy (semaglutide) and Zepbound (tirzepatide). Which medication, if any, is right for you depends on your health history, your goals, and how you respond to treatment.

Do I need to have diabetes?

No. Wegovy and Zepbound are FDA-approved for chronic weight management in adults with or without diabetes. In general, they may be considered for adults with a BMI of 30 or higher, or 27 or higher with a weight-related health condition such as high blood pressure or high cholesterol. You may have heard of Ozempic and Mounjaro: they contain the same active ingredients, but they are FDA-approved for type 2 diabetes, not weight management.

Do you prescribe compounded medications?

No. We prescribe FDA-approved medications only. Compounded versions of these drugs are not FDA-approved, which means the FDA has not reviewed them for safety, effectiveness, or quality.

What are the common side effects?

The most common side effects of GLP-1 medications are digestive: nausea, diarrhea, constipation, vomiting, and stomach discomfort. They are often most noticeable when starting or increasing a dose. Your provider reviews the risks with you before you start, monitors how you're doing, and can adjust your treatment to help manage side effects.

How long will I need to take medication?

It depends on you. Obesity is a chronic condition, and many people need ongoing treatment to maintain their results; weight regain is common after stopping medication. Your provider works with you on a long-term plan, including what maintenance could look like.

About Obesity Medicine

What is obesity medicine?

Obesity medicine is the field of medicine focused on treating obesity as a chronic disease. It considers the many factors that affect weight, including biology, genetics, hormones, medications, sleep, stress, and environment, and uses evidence-based tools such as nutrition and activity guidance, behavioral support, and, when appropriate, medication.

Is weight just about willpower?

No. Body weight is regulated by complex biological systems. After weight loss, the body often responds by increasing hunger and slowing energy use, which is one reason weight can be hard to keep off with diet and exercise alone. That is not a personal failure. It is physiology, and it is why medical treatment can help.

Do you provide primary care?

No. NewVeria focuses specifically on obesity and weight management. If you have needs outside that scope, we may recommend care with your primary-care provider or an appropriate specialist.

Is my information private?

Yes. Your care is delivered through HIPAA-compliant systems, and your health information is kept confidential.
